Perspective #06 · Performance

Metrics ≠ Performance

Not everything that counts can be counted.

Why measurement is important, but not sufficient, for real organisational performance.

Measurement is essential. But the moment a metric becomes the goal, it stops being a reliable signal.

The seduction of the dashboard

Dashboards create the comforting illusion that performance is fully visible. But the most important dynamics in an organisation — trust, clarity, decision quality, momentum — resist being captured cleanly. When leadership manages only what the dashboard shows, the dashboard starts to drive the behaviour it was meant to measure.

Not everything that counts can be counted.

Goodhart's consequence

Once a measure becomes a target, people optimise for the measure. Activity rises, reported outcomes improve, and the underlying system often weakens. The numbers get better; the organisation does not.

What to do instead

Treat metrics as one input among several. Pair quantitative signals with judgment, conversation and direct observation. Ask what the dashboard is not showing. Measurement should support decisions — not replace them.
